Issue #1630      March 12, 2014

IWD March Sydney

Several thousand people turned out for one of the best International Women’s Day marches and rally for some time on March 8, with strong contingents from the trade unions, the Communist Party, and other left and progressive parties, women’s organisations and solidarity organisations as well as many individuals. One of the main themes was women’s reproductive rights, in particular Zoe’s Bill, legislation currently before the NSW parliament, which aims to give a foetus legal status of personhood. Other issues included pay equality, women with disability, women’s legal services, women and education, poverty, sole parents (“Why I’m a sole parent activist: Kerry Arch” this issue) and solidarity with women in other parts of the world.
