Season’s greetings to Guardian readers

On behalf of the Communist Party of Australia, we would like to pass on to all our readers best wishes for the holiday season and a happy new year in 2014.

This year has been a very challenging one for Australians committed to peace and social justice. Internationally, we have seen US imperialism step up its aggression across the globe, with the ongoing occupation of Afghanistan, the proxy war against Syria, its military “Pivot” to the Asia Pacific and Indian Ocean regions, and the failure of the industrialised nations to accept their responsibility and make the necessary commitments to address climate change. At home there has been the election of the Abbott government and the promise of the more rapid application of the neo-liberal agenda. The extent of these plans is becoming clearer with every passing day. Refugees and other vulnerable people have been the first to feel the effects of the worsening political environment in the country.

The year 2014 is shaping up as a turning point for the resistance to the attempts to push the cost of the global capitalist economic crisis onto workers and other exploited people. Unity of those affected will be key to defeating the attacks. The Communist Party of Australia will be working hard to achieve the goals set at its 12th National Congress held in October. We are confident that we will achieve them and that we can make a major contribution to the united fight back that is building.

We would like to thank our readers for their support during the year and wish you good health, peace and success in your struggles in 2014.

Active and united for a Socialist Australia.

Bob Briton – General Secretary
Vinnie Molina – National President
