Gladys Marín — condolence message

The Guardian regrets to announce the death of Gladys Marín, current Pesident and former General Secretary of the Communist Party of Chile, after a two-year battle with cancer. Ms Marín was secretary of the Communist Youth League and a Member of Parliament at the time of Pinochet's military coup in 1973. After several years in exile she returned to Chile as a leader of the underground resistance to the dictatorship. Ms Marín is widely respected as a human rights campaigner. The President of Chile, Ricardo Lagos, has declared two days of national mourning. Her funeral is to be held on Tuesday March 8, International Women's Day. The Guardian will carry an obituary next week.
